Latest news from AHARS

Gday folks, this is Phil VK5SRP with the latest news from The Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society.

Good news, the AHARS web site is now working. Paul, VK5PAS the web master, has spent a lot of time updating and giving the site a new look. https://www.ahars.com.au/

Lunches at the Blackwood RSL are on the second and the fourth Friday of each month. The November lunches will be on the 13th and the 27th of the month. You can book for the lunch at the RSL on 8278 6253 or via email at rslbwood@bigpond.com. The RSL would like us to book for the Friday lunches a day or two before the actual day so they have an idea of how many will be attending.

The October general meeting was well attended and we had more Show and Tells than we could run on the night. The plan is to present these after the AGM on the 18th of February

At the November meeting Brian, VK5VI, will present a presentation on the South East Radio Group linked repeater network. This will be interesting to many as it is a complex network with a lot of history. Soon it will extend its reach into western Victoria.

I have had several requests to start the regular videoing of the general meetings and I am looking for someone to do this again. Would be easier for that person if we had two or three people who would like to do this and we could have a roster to make it easier on those doing this.

At the last committee meeting we decided we would not have a Christmas Dinner this year, the logistics of this are difficult due to the Covid restrictions. Instead we are planning to have our January Picnic on Sunday the 17th of January at the Marion RSL and like last year, it will be free to financial members. It will be about $10.00 for non members including your partners who are not financial members of AHARS.  I will be calling for registrations when we have finalised the arrangement with the RSL.

I am still looking for someone to take over the club history records from Lloyd Butler. Lloyd has turned 96 and he says he has done his bit, it is time for a younger person to take over.  If you would like to take over this important task please email me and I will send you the letter Lloyd has sent the committee.

My email address is vk5srp@wia.org.au

AHARS news for the week beginning 11/10/2020

Today you should have or will received an email from Barry VK5BW outlining what is happening with the JOTA event next weekend on the 17th of October. If you have some time to help, email Barry to let him know you would like to be involved. If you want to use your home station to contact the JOTA participants round Australia, Barry’s letter gives you an indication of the frequencies that will be used. We setup/fixed three antennas at the shack last weekend and these are 40, 30 and 20 Metres. Barry’s email is VK5BW@wia.org.au

Lunches at the Blackwood RSL are on the second and the fourth Friday of each month. The next lunch will be on the 23rd of October. The last Friday at the RSL was good with ten members attending. Numbers were down because ALARA has its Friday lunches at the Police club on the second Friday of the month. You can book for the lunch at the RSL on 8278 6253 or via email at rslbwood@bigpond.com. The RSL would like us to book for the Friday lunches a day or two before the actual day so they have an idea of how many will be attending.

Our next General Meeting will be on the 15th of October and it will be our 2020 show and tell. Look around you shack and shed for something interesting to show off on the night. We will have the projector and a computer setup and so you can bring your notes and diagrams for your demonstration along to show.
Our first general meeting after the Covid shut down on the 17th of September was a success and in spite of dreadful stormy weather, we had 26 people attend. We are hoping for double that number at the next general meetings.

The November meeting Brian, VK5VI, will present a presentation on the South East Radio Group linked repeater network. This will be interesting to many as it's a complex network with a lot of history. Soon it will extend its reach into Western Victoria.

Remember AHARS has no general meetings in December and January and we start off the new year with the AGM on 18th of February. We will still hold the RSL lunches and we may even be able to put on a technical session during this down time.

Lloyd Butler turns 96 in October and has decided it is time for him to retire and hand over maintenance of the club history records. If you would like to take over this important task please email me and I will send you the letter Lloyd has sent the committee.

At the recent committee meeting we decided not to have a Christmas Dinner this year but we will have the January picnic. If the weather is fine it will be held outside under the trees. I still have to confirm a date with the Marion RSL.

Paul the web master and his technical expert have both been unwell for some weeks and so no progress has been made on getting the web site fixed, keep an eye on these emails for now.

Cheers

JOTA

10/11/2020

To all,

This coming weekend we are helping the Girl Guides by operating the Shack as VK5BAR for the JOTA weekend on Saturday 17th of October as per last couple of Sunday morning broadcasts. The attached list contains the frequencies to be used, both internationally and here in Australia.

We have been busy at the shack preparing for this event, repairs to antennas and the addition of a new 30m antenna as well, and cleaning up of the shack and surrounds thanks to several volunteers and regulars, this has been very much appreciated.

If you have some time to spare on Saturday, please keep and ear out for us, we will have quite a number of Guides coming through the shack to talk on the radios, we could probably use an extra operator or two to help out.

All COVID restrictions apply, so spacing needs to be observed and contacts lists will need to be kept as per the regulations, the GG leaders will be assisting in the chaperoning duties and running their own events in the main hall, with quite a few items such as simple Morse sessions and Semaphore exercises happening through the day.

Thanks to all who have helped !

Regards & 73

Latest news from AHARS

Good morning, this is Phil VK5SRP with news from the Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society.

We have started the lunches at the Blackwood RSL again and we had fifteen people attend our first lunch post the shut downs. It was just like old times, lots of chatter and catching up on the latest. The next lunch will be on the 14th of August so long as we do not have an outbreak like VK3 and VK2. If you wish to attend the lunch you will have to book with the RSL on 8278 6253 or via email at rslbwood@bigpond.com. Alternatively you can send me an email and I will book for you.
We have permission to use the shack for an assessment and training session on the weekend of the 29th and 30th of August. Please contact the Clubs training officer, Sasi, VK5SN by sending an e-mail to vk5sn@wia.org.au and let him know that you wish to attend. He will send back a confirmation of what you require to bring along and any other information that you may need. UPGRADE exams are also held on the Sunday, again contact Sasi to book your self in for these.
Still no date for when we can start the shack coffee and technical mornings.

Barry VK5BW and Paul VK5PH are working on sourcing two Kiwi SDR’s and the other equipment we need to add two more, four channel remote receivers to Pauls very quiet receiving site. We still have to resolve the power supply limitations.  He needs more solar cells, batteries and a radio quiet solar converter/battery charger. The KiwiSDR’s are in short supply so it may take some time to obtain them. I do know that AREG and NERC are also in the market for these.
We have two AHARS nets each week on the VK5RAD repeater, 147 MHz with a minus 600 KHz offset. The original Monday night net starting at 8.00 PM and what I am calling the Corona net on Thursday nights also starting at 8.00 PM.

Remember by joining in on the two metre nets you are exercising the social distancing we have to observe, we are two metre apart.
I have received some more information from the Mitcham Council about access to the hall and we should be able to start our General Meeting on the 17th of September. Last Sunday I said this was to be in November, sorry about that.

I have the 17th of September down on the calendar as the annual members Buy and Sell. This event will be limited to current financial members of AHARS. Keep an ear on the broadcasts and an eye on your AHARS emails. If the SA Corona status deteriorates like it has in much of the rest of VK land then we may have to reschedule this even, we will be looking at alternatives at the committee meeting next Wednesday.

We have cancelled this years Buy and Sell in November. I doubt if the borders will be open and our commercial vendors come from Victoria and so do some of our buyers. We will look at running one in the new year.

The AHARS web site has been shifted to Kern Internet, a local Adelaide based business but we are still having a few problems with the site, it did not transfer quite like it should.

We are still looking for a secretary so if you would like to fill that position please email me.
You can send me an email to VK5SRP@WIA.ORG.AU or a text message to 0428 835 621.

That’s all for this week, 73.

G'day folks, we are in the middle of shifting our web site to an Adelaide host, and it will take some time for the DNS to settle down and get the web site like it was a week ago.

In the mean time I will send out a few mass emails with important information.

We can start our Blackwood RSL lunches again and the first one will be on the 24th of July. If you wish to attend these lunches you will have to book with the RSL on 8278 6253 or via email at rslbwood@bigpond.com.

Alternatively, I already have six people booked for this Friday and if you would like me to add you to this list please send me an email requesting I do so.

Please find the latest version of the AHARS calendar attached to this email.

You will be pleased to know the new host is KernWi-Fi Pty Ltd / KernHotSpot run by Phil Kern VK5ZEY.

What is happening at the Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society ?

7/13/2020

G’day folks, what is happening at the Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society ?

First news is we are in the process of shifting our web site hosting to a South Australian provider.  Pat the treasurer has had difficulty communicating with US based host we have been using and we have not been able to pay for the next six months of hosting on HostGator.

Our web master Paul VK5PAS will see to it the web site is shifted to this new local server. Thanks Paul for all you effort in keeping this valuable AHARS communication channel operating over the years.

Chatting on one of our 2M nets one night I was made aware of Kern Wi-Fi and further investigation told me they have been providing super fast Fixed Wireless Internet for Residential & Business customers in South Australia for many years now.  They are 100% Adelaide based and owned and work with many local communities to provide high speed internet services.

Phil is an Amateur, his call sign is VK5ZEY and your committee is very pleased to have an Adelaide based company host our web site and Phil, being an Amateur, makes this arrangement even better.

You may find we could have a few days when ahars.com.au is not available as the transition takes place.

The next news clip is from Peter, VK5JP, and is good news about the VK5RLH repeater:

Hi guys,  Thanks to Steve VK5ZSW and the guys in the Mid North the VK5RLH Repeater as of this morning (Sunday 28th/06/2020) has gone to Yaesu C4FM Digital. This will give wide coverage to the guys with C4FM units throughout mid north area. Due to the large growth of C4FM units in the Mid North it was decided to upgrade the VK5RLH 2M repeater to digital. Thanks to Steve VK5ZSW who donated his DR1 C4FM repeater for the update...

This repeater will now complement the existing C4FM/analogue 70Cm repeater VK5RCT (438.325Mhz negative 5.0MHz offset) at Moonta. At this stage there is no Wires-“X” availability but this will possibly change down the track, currently the Moonta 70Cm Repeater is wires-“X” capable

The VK5RLH repeater is on 146.925MHz with a - .600MHz offset and is now both Yaesu Fusion C4FM Digital/ Analogue Capable. The repeater has been set to AMS mode so those who wish to use the repeater in Analogue mode can still do so but will now require a CSST Tone of 91.5.

Those of you who are members of various clubs could you please inform other members who have C4FM capability of the changes to the VK5RLH Repeater......
Moving forward to a Digital Futur.
146.925    146.325     - VK5RLH    Bumbunga Hill    Central North
Cheers Pete VK5JP

KIWI SDR project

At the last AHARS Committee meeting, a resolution was passed to purchase a KIWI SDR and other equipment needed to add another four receiver channels for Paul VK5PH's remote site.

The power supply limitations still needs to be resolved.  Paul needs more solar cells, batteries, and a radio quiet solar converter battery charger.

Barry VK5BW and Paul VK5PH are working on sourcing the items needed.

A radio amateur's call for help was relayed from across the Atlantic.

From the ARRL Letter dated 25th June 2020.......

When Richard Tashner, N2EO, of Massapequa, New York, suffered a medical emergency on May 18, his DMR portable was closer than his phone. His call for help was answered by Maxis Johnston, GM0MRJ, who put out a call for "anyone in the States." Kent County Amateur Radio Club member Ken Dix, KB2KBD, in Delaware heard the call on the local 146.91 MHz repeater, which was linked to the North American talk group. Dix called authorities in Tashner's vicinity, and help was dispatched. Dix said the dispatcher in New York was able to hear part of the call and was amazed at how an amateur radio communication had gone from New York to Scotland to Delaware and then back to New York. The dispatcher expressed surprise at how quickly the information had been relayed across the Atlantic. -- Thanks to the ARES E-Letter via Jerry Palmer, N3KRX
