Hello Club Members, Fellow Amateur Operators, and Everyone,
Here is this week’s news from AHARS. Also, at the last meeting, one of our members paid me $10 for his badge, and after taking a careful mental note of his callsign, I can’t remember it. If this was you, can you please drop me an email to president@AHARS.au. It will save me having to search through all the payments back in the Bank accounts. The next Technical Session, on Saturday 4th November will be on getting the deviation right on your FM transceivers used for working the Linked Repeater Network, and the importance of getting it right. Should be an interesting discussion. Don’t forget that if you would be interested in taking part in the OCF Balun building workshop with Kieth (VK5OQ), to drop me an email at president@AHARS.au. We are planning to have this as our Saturday Session for December, and we are hoping to put together a whole kit to assemble on the day. We are hoping that the kit will be in the vicinity of $30-35 for everything. The AHARS Annual Lunch is to be held on the 19th of November this year at the Belair Hotel. You will need to email Geoff (VK5JB) at secretary@AHARS.au to add your name to the list of attendees. Here is the information that I have received from the Bistro people at theBelair Hotel:
So, when you make a booking with Geoff (secretary@AHARS.au) could you pleas indicate your preferences from the choices listed above for each person attending. Hello Club Members, Fellow Amateur Operators, and Everyone,
This is John, VK5RJ with this week’s news from AHARS. The analysis on the questionnaire has been performed, and once the committee has had a chance to discuss and absorb the results, we may publish them for all to read… Stay tuned! The presentation on Project Horus and the Balloon Launches by the AREG club was really interesting. A great presentation, thanks Mark (VK5QI), and Mark has given us the URL for where we can look at the slides. Go to https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1npKo7lpk6nhOFOPPoNSjpB84wlNHGJtHEilcx3XQzLE/edit?usp=sharing I have heard on the grapevine from Tony (VK5FBIC) who visited Phil (VK5SRP) in Modbury Hospital today that he is doing quite well. We all wish him the best and as speedy a recovery as can be possibly had in his current situation. I am sure we all feel deeply concerned for Pat and Phil at this time! There will be NO October Saturday Tech Session held, due to a prior booking for the Hall. So take the day off and mow the lawn instead! Also, don’t forget that if you would be interested in taking part in a workshop with Kieth (VK5OQ) to build a balun suitable for an Off-Centre-Fed (OCF) dipole to drop me an email at president@AHARS.au. We are hoping that the kit will be in the vicinity of $30-35 for everything. We are still firming up the details for the follow-up “Telescopes in the Park” evening with Kym Thalassoudis, The plan is to hold it on a Saturday Evening (proposed for Sat 21st October) at the Goodwood Orphanage park. A Chicken, Chips and Salad sumptuous repast for a modest fee of around $5 each will be provided. Wives and partners definitely invited. There will be a limited number of places available (approximately 30 people), and it is planned to have a number of telescopes for people to have a look through, as well as a large screen monitor to show Kym’s Electronically Enhanced Astronomy software output in real time. There will be a special booking site (Eventbrite) to register on, and it is expected that those wishing to participate will pre-pay by direct deposit into the AHARS Bank account. There will be an emergency number advertised in case the weather turns inclement and the event cannot go ahead. Clouds and rain do not mix with telescopes outside! After a flurry of emails when Gaggle mail was opened up last weekend, it has all seemed to settle down and I feel that it can be used in a respectful manner so as to not cause too much spam to the general membership. The moderators will try to keep it all under control and within reasonable bounds. Hello Club Members, Fellow Amateur Operators, and Everyone,
This is John, VK5RJ with this week’s news from AHARS. At Thursday night’s General Meeting, we were privileged to have a presentation on Astronomy, by Kym Thalassoudis, the immediate past president of the Astronomical Society of South Australia. And what an amazing presentation on “Exploring the Universe from your back yard” it was. I was gobsmacked by the quality of the images that Kym showed us that he had taken from his suburban back yard in Prospect, using the tools and techniques now available in the field of “Electronic Assisted Astronomy” or EAA. And it isn’t that hard. I’m hooked and I will be doing some research and study into how I can get involved, on my limited budget. Kym has been agreed to provide us with some links to information and web sites for anybody who wants to look further. Free Monthly Maps of the Night Sky (The Evening Sky Map): https://skymaps.com/tesm/ We would still appreciate it if a lot more people would fill out the questionnaire and return it to either myself at president@AHARS.au or even better to Paul (VK5PH) at training@AHARS.au Don’t forget that this is your chance to tell us all about the good and bad, and your hopes and expectations of the Club. We are hoping that everybody will be honest and open with their responses. For those that don’t have or use email, we will have hard copies at future Saturday Sessions and Club Meetings, and a few people did do this on Thursday night. We will be having a Saturday Session coming up on the “Practical Use of FT8 on HF Bands”. I don’t profess to be an expert on FT8, so this will just be a demonstration of how I have put my setup together, and how I run it, in conjunction with automatic logging to QRZ and Logbook of the World using other associated free software. Hopefully we can get some contacts on the day! And a special shout out to all members from our web master Paul (VK5PAS). PLEASE, anybody with photos, starting with the recent Life Membership presentations, and anything else at all related to the AHARS club and its activities, Paul would love to be able to include them in his work on the history of the club and show them on the Web site. Please drop him an email or get in touch via the Facebook group page and he will give you a link to where you can drop them onto his dropbox area. Also, we need to find out how many people would be interested in taking part in a workshop with Kieth (VK5OQ) to build a balun suitable for an Off-Centre-Fed (OCF) dipole. This is potentially our Saturday Session for December, and we are hoping to put together a whole kit to assemble on the day. If you think you would be interested in participating in this activity, can you drop me an email at president@AHARS.au We are hoping that the kit will be in the vicinity of $30-35for everything. An important note to all amateur operators, shortwave listeners, and other interested radio people: In the pursuit of furthering communications and interactions between clubs, organisations and radio enthusiasts, we now have access to a Forum to share information, resources and events. Hello Club Members, Fellow Amateur Operators, and Everyone,
This is John, VK5RJ with this week’s news from AHARS. Yes, a very successful Buy and Sell event at the Marion RSL Last Saturday. Apart from the equipment and paraphernalia that changed hands, many friendships and acquaintances were remade, and new ones struck up. I enjoyed the day immensely, and was very happy to see that it went so well A big thank you to Geoff, VK5JB for the great work that he put in to make it a success. Additionally, a big thankyou to all our members who contributed in any way during the day. Sales of the Lee Turner Estate items went well, with many moved on. There are still a couple of very expensive high power linear amplifiers for sale if anybody is interested. Get in touch with Barry (VK5BW) for details. Thursday nights meeting went well, with an excellent presentation on WICEN given by the President, Louis (VK5FLY). It is a really worthwhile organisation, and I encourage anybody who is at all interested to look up their web page and consider joining up. You never know when you might be able to help if there is a disaster or some other calamity. They are having one of their regular BBQ get togethers on Saturday 29th July and the North Glenelg Scout Hall. Get along for a good day, with a free sausage and soft drink. Don’t forget that if you want to reserve a place on the next John Dawes Session, on Writing for Radio, you need to drop me an email reserving your spot. We are hoping that we can get similar numbers to those who participated in John’s last session. This one will be run on Saturday 5th of August at 10:00 am in the Hewitt Room at the Blackwood Uniting Church. Please see the flyer attached flyer to the email for this. Next month at the General Meeting on Thursday the 17th of August we will be having a presentation on Astronomy, by Kym Thalassoudis from the Astronomical Society of South Australia. More information on this in the coming weeks, but I assure you that it will be very interesting. We will also soon be emailing out “The Questionaire” that Paul (VK5PH) introduced to us on Thursday Evening. This is your chance to tell us all about the good and bad, and your hopes and expectations of the Club. We are hoping that everybody will be honest and open with their responses. Hello Club Members, Fellow Amateur Operators, and Everyone,
This is John, VK5RJ with this week’s news from AHARS. Not a lot new and exciting has happened this week, but I know we have at least one newly licensed member come up in the last week. Welcome Richard, VK5AAD, and we look forward to your QSOs on air. The next Saturday Tech Session on the 1st of July at 10:00am will feature a presentation from Paul, VK5PH, on “CW Rennaisance – A Practical Approach” where he will show us some Tips, Tricks, Techniques and Tools for learning and starting to use CW and Morse Code. Those who know Paul understand how passionate he is about CW and using it on air. A Session not to be missed! Don’t forget that if you want to reserve a table at the AHARS Public Buy & Sell on Saturday the 15th of July, you need to drop an email to VK5JB, at geoffb.100@bigpond.com . He will get back to you and confirm your booking. Payment will be made on the day at the venue. I believe that there are still a couple of tables available, so please let everybody know so they don’t miss out! We still need helpers on the day, and are looking for members to put their hand up and give us an hour of their time to help set up, pack up, or even just man the AHARS tables to give others a bit of a break. Please drop Geoff, VK5JB an email at geoffb.100@bigpond.com . This is John, VK5RJ with this week’s news from AHARS. The Tech Session held by John Dawes last Saturday appeared to be a hit, and was appreciated by all who attended. Thanks very much John. Don’t forget that if you want to reserve a table at the AHARS Public Buy & Sell on Saturday the 15th of July, you need to drop an email to VK5JB, on geoffb.100@bigpond.com . He will get back to you and confirm your booking. Payment will be made on the day at the venue. Again, please see the attached flyer to this email. I believe that we have about 20 tables already booked, so don’t miss out! Our special presentation of Life Membership Badges will be made to Lloyd Butler, Hans Smit, Christine Taylor, Jim Tregellas and Barry Williams this meeting. Don’t miss the opportunity to come and offer your congratulations and well wishes to these special people who have contributed so much to our club in past years. Our presentation at this meeting will be by VK5ZC (Mike) on general Antenna principles and other interesting stuff, which should be very interesting, as there is always something to learn! A successful committee meeting was held after the Saturday Session, and one of the topics discussed was the possibility of adopting a new way of sending out email and information to members, with the possibility of Special Interest Groups and even a Buy and Sell section. We have asked some of our committee members to look into that and report back to us. Groups.io is one option being considered. Remember that we have our regular Monday Evening AHARS 2 metre Net, on the VK5RAD repeater on 147.00 Mhz. It is a general chat about what we have all been doing and anything that is of interest. It is open to all registered Amateur Operators, and we especially welcome new and recently licensed people to join in and overcome the jitters of being on air. Starts at 20:00 (8 o’clock) and goes to around 21:30 (half past nine) or thereabouts. Come up for a chat and say Hello, especially if we haven’t had the pleasure previously! You don’t have to be an AHARS member to join in! And don’t forget the Bottle Shop Net conducted by VK5LB (Dean) on 3.62MHz every Tuesday evening at 19:30 One of the longest running Nets on the airwaves anywhere! Come up and say Hello if you have 80 metre capability! As always, if you have anything of interest, or any exciting news, please let me know so we can share things with all our members. And that's all for now from me, so keep looking at the emails, and listening to the Sunday broadcast, and stay away from COVID and other nasty bugs. Cheers & 73 from VK5RJ and AHARS for this week.
