23rd March 2013 - Technical talk at the shack.
On a damp and cool Blackwood morning, 19 brave and keen souls turned up to enjoy an exposition by John, VK5BJE, on Digital Modes John firstly demonstrated JT65, a simple-looking, but quite sophisticated weak signal mode: All that is needed is a computer, sound card, a simple interface from PC to the rig, and the rig itself. John outlined his preferences for power output and ALC settings. He recommended the Signalink soundcard from Tigertronics as the ideal solution for the sound interface. For setting the PC to accurate time (essential for JT65), he recommended Net Time. John managed to make an (almost) complete QSO with Graham VK5KGP, at Victor Harbor, before the Ground Wave faded away. John gave out a five page information handout. A copy of this is available from John or the Editor. John also demonstrated eQSL and LOTW, both of which he makes use of for his QSL-ing. His next demonstration was of DSTAR: John is one of a rather small group of DSTAR aficionados in this state. He‘s sold on the mode, its flexibility and possibilities. He outlined how to set up a DSTAR rig to work in the system. Then, via VK2R??, using his H/T, he made a perfectly clear contact with Brian, VK3BBB/2, who was – at the same time – giving a similar demonstration to a meeting of the Far South Coast Amateur Radio Club at Bega!
