The latest news from the Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society

Wishing you all a safe and healthy Easter season.

AHARS had a back to the shack breakfast on Saturday the 27th of March and 16 members checked in and enjoyed a breakfast of Bacon and Eggs, tea, coffee and juice. We are planning on doing this whenever there are five Saturdays in a month. Pat is planning on having pan cakes instead of bacon and eggs at the next one on the 29th of May 2021.

We are hoping to start our regular meetings at the shack on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month soon, stay tuned for when this is going to happen and details of the technical sessions on the fourth Saturdays.

The next General Meeting on the 15th of April will be a Members only Buy and Sell. Bring along your unwanted items and offer them for sale to your fellow AHARS members. Remember we will be still under Covid restrictions so please observe all the Covid rules.

AHARS is also planning on having a silent auction soon and John VK5EMI is busy making up a list of the more valuable items that are stored in various members QTH’s, mostly from deceased estate collections.

Have you contacted aVI100AF or VK100AF station yet ? Read about these special event call signs for the RAAF 100 years and give them a call during the time they will be on air. More information on the WIA web site at:

https://www.wia.org.au/newsevents/events/

So far we have had more than 80% of the members pay their subs for 2021, well done folks. If you do not have access to on-line banking you can send us your payment to the AHARS post box, AHARS Inc, P.O. Box 401, Blackwood, S.A. 5051. We have also signed up eleven new members and three people have rejoined after an absence of one year.

The subs were still $20 for WIA members and $25 for non WIA members if paid before the end of March. There is now a late fee of $5.00 to be added to these figures.

You can pay by direct deposit:  Name: AHARS, BSB: 105 186, Account no: 036 248 940

Please do not forget to include your name and or call sign in you details. Pat is sending emails to all those who have paid to make sure AHARS has their correct email address.

I have updated the AHARS calendar on the web site and this can be accessed by:

Clicking on the upcoming events tab at the opening page and then under the BIG PDF logo you will find a PDF file called AHARS Calendar_ 2021 and a version number. Click on this file, this is the calendar and the current version is -  ahars_calendar_2021_ver_1_0.pdf

Keep an eye on your emails and an ear on the Sunday broadcasts to find out what AHARS is planning for 2021.

My email address is for this month is philstorr@adam.com.au.

That’s all for this week, 73.

AHARS notes for 22nd March 2021

AHARS is planning to have a Back to the Shack Breakfast on March 27th. You may remember we had Breakfast at the shack regularly before the pandemic hit us. If you wish to attend this event next weekend, please send me an email with the number of people attending. Send your email to my personal email address, philstorr@adam.com.au.

The breakfast will be eggs and bacon and tea and coffee.
I wonder how many of our members took part in the John Moyle this weekend ? This is not a typical contest event where many participants are hell bent on getting the highest score and can be quiet rude to folk who are not used to the cut and thrust of other contests. It is meant to be a fun event.

Read about the special event call signs for the RAAF 100 years and give them a call during the time they will be on air. More information on the WIA web site at:

https://www.wia.org.au/newsevents/events/

Pat the Treasure is pleased with how many people have already paid there subs for 2021. Most members have paid by direct deposit. So far we have had more than 78% of the  members pay their subs, well done folks. If you do not have access to on-line banking you can send us your payment to the AHARS post box, AHARS Inc, P.O. Box 401, Blackwood, S.A. 5051 We have also signed up eight new members and two people have rejoined after an absence of one year.

The subs are still $20 for WIA members and $25 for non WIA members if paid before the end of March. After that date there will be a $5.00 late fee.

You can pay by direct deposit:  Name: AHARS, BSB: 105 186, Account no: 036 248 940
Please do not forget to include your name and or call sign in you details. Pat is sending emails to all those who have paid to make sure AHARS has their correct email address.

Brian, VK5VI told us about how the Sunday Broadcast goes to air each week and included an interesting history lesson on how this has evolved over the years, thanks again Brian. Brian will be our guest later in the year with the story of the South East Radio Groups extensive linked repeater network. Brian has been an active member of NERC for many years and looks after the NERC repeaters.

Keep an eye on your emails and an ear on the Sunday broadcasts to find out what AHARS is planning for 2021.
My email address is for this month is philstorr@adam.com.au.

That’s all for this week, 73.

The latest news from The Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society.
This years John Moyle weekend is going to be held over the weekend of the 20th and 21th of March. AHARS was planning on doing the event and we are looking for members who wish to take part. So far I have only had one response to this call and looking at the regulations we cannot use the AHARS shack as I intended. This means unless we have volunteers to run the event at some suitable location, this will not go head.
May I suggest members run home stations for this year, here is the format information for the event.

You can take part in only a few hours of the 24 hours and you can take part from your QTH instead of an AHARS contest location. For more details got to the WIA web site and look up John Moyle 2021 and you will find there are a number of categories you can choose from: 24 Hour Portable Operation – Multiple Operator, 24 Hour Portable Operation – Single Operator, Six Hour Portable Operation – Multiple Operator, Six Hour Portable Operation – Single Operator, Home Station – 24 Hour, Home Station - 6 Hour.

The John Moyle is not a typical contest event where many participants are hell bent on getting the highest score and can be quiet rude to folk who are not used to the cut and thrust of other contests. It is meant to be a fun event.

Pat the Treasure tells me the subs are rolling in quite fast this year, mostly by direct deposit. If you do not have this facility you can pay in person at the next General meeting on Thursday the 18th of March at the club rooms.

The guest speaker for the March meeting will be Brian VK5VI and he will let you into the secret of how the Sunday broadcast goes to air each week.

The subs are still $20 for WIA members and $25 for non WIA members if paid before the end of March. After that date there will be a $5.00 late fee.You can pay by direct deposit:  Name: AHARS, BSB: 105 186, Account no: 036 248 940

Please do not forget to include your name and or call sign in you details. Pat is sending emails to all those who have paid to make sure AHARS has their correct email address.

We will soon be collecting names for those who would like an AHARS name badge (Pat already has some names) and we will be deciding on the source of AHARS shirts. Pat already has a few name and sizes for these also.

I am hoping we can have a “Back to the Shack” breakfast during March or April. You may remember we had Breakfast at the shack regularly before the pandemic hit us.

Keep an eye on your emails and an ear on the Sunday broadcasts to find out what AHARS is planning for 2021.

G’day folks, this is Phil VK5SRP with this weeks news from The Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society for the 8th of February 2021. Would you believe it, one month of 2021 already gone.

Lunches at the Blackwood RSL are on the second and the fourth Friday of each month. The  next lunch will be on the 12th of February, that is this week. You can book for the lunch at the RSL on 8278 6253 or via email at rslbwood@bigpond.com. The RSL would like us to book for the Friday lunches a day or two before the actual day so they have an idea of how many will be attending.

Our first General meeting for 2021 will be the AGM on February the 18th and it is time to think about the AHARS committee for 2021. AHARS needs you ! I will send out the document outlining the duties of those on the committee and a nomination form.  If you feel moved to join the committee, fill out this form and post it to me at PO Box 501 Modbury or scan and sent via email. I already have volunteers for the positions of secretary and treasure.

Christine will be doing the supper in a Covid safe way, thankyou Christine for all the effort you have put into supper over the years.

At the AGM Paul, VK5PAS, will be showing and telling you about the
AHARS web site. Paul, the web master, has been doing a great job of the AHARS web site and has now taken over responsibility for the AHARS history, a BIG thank you Paul for all your efforts.

At the March meeting on the 18th of March, Brian VK5VI, will be telling us about he WIA broadcast and how it goes to air on Sunday mornings.

Barry, VK5BW is looking for someone to help him with our repeater network. If you would like to help with this important activity, send Barry and email at VK5BW@wia.org.au

At a committee meeting during 2020 we decided to increase the Subs by $5.00 to non WIA members. Pat has pointed out these people cost us extra for our WIA provided insurance. The subs are still $20 for WIA members and $25 for non WIA members if paid before the end of March. After that date there will be a $5.00 late fee.

You can pay in person at the AGM in February or by direct deposit:
Direct deposit details are, Name: AHARS, BSB: 105 186, Account no: 036 248 940

Please do not forget to include your name and or call sign in you details.

About two weeks ago the GRN antenna was neatly cut off from the roof of the Eden Hills CFS. Apparently it was a folded dipole for the GRN frequencies of 400 to 420 MHz, possibly useful at 70cm.

If anyone is offered a similar aerial for sale, please contact me or SAPOL.
