Hello Club Members, Fellow Amateur Operators, and Everyone,
This is John, VK5RJ with this week’s news from AHARS. Not a lot new and exciting has happened this week, but I know we have at least one newly licensed member come up in the last week. Welcome Richard, VK5AAD, and we look forward to your QSOs on air. The next Saturday Tech Session on the 1st of July at 10:00am will feature a presentation from Paul, VK5PH, on “CW Rennaisance – A Practical Approach” where he will show us some Tips, Tricks, Techniques and Tools for learning and starting to use CW and Morse Code. Those who know Paul understand how passionate he is about CW and using it on air. A Session not to be missed! Don’t forget that if you want to reserve a table at the AHARS Public Buy & Sell on Saturday the 15th of July, you need to drop an email to VK5JB, at geoffb.100@bigpond.com . He will get back to you and confirm your booking. Payment will be made on the day at the venue. I believe that there are still a couple of tables available, so please let everybody know so they don’t miss out! We still need helpers on the day, and are looking for members to put their hand up and give us an hour of their time to help set up, pack up, or even just man the AHARS tables to give others a bit of a break. Please drop Geoff, VK5JB an email at geoffb.100@bigpond.com . We have been asked to post the information for our regular weekly nets, so here it is: Monday night AHARS 2 metre net. 147.00 on VK5RAD at 20:00 It is a general chat about what we have all been doing and anything that is of interest. It is open to all registered Amateur Operators, and we especially welcome new and recently licensed people to join in and overcome the jitters of being on air. You don’t have to be an AHARS Member to join in. Boat Anchor Net. Conducted by VK5LB (Dean) on 3.62 MHz every Tuesday evening at 19:30 One of the longest running Nets on the airwaves anywhere! Come up and say Hello if you have 80 metre capability! ANZA DX Net The ANZA (Australian, New Zealand and Africa) net runs every day on 14.183MHZ at 0515UTC with an early check in at 0500UTC. It is a list net and one has to wait one's turn to give reports, etc. There are check-ins from all over the world (anywhere from 15 to 35 per day) and it would be a great platform for those wanting to work towards their DXCC awards. Paul, VK5PAS and Shirley VK5YL alternate as net controllers on Thursday, which is Ladies Day. It would be fantastic if other YLs could join in especially on these days but all are welcome any day. As always, if you have anything of interest, or any exciting news, please let me know so we can share things with all our members.

Hello Club Members, Fellow Amateur Operators, and Everyone,
This is John, VK5RJ with this week’s news from AHARS. The Tech Session held by John Dawes last Saturday appeared to be a hit, and was appreciated by all who attended. Thanks very much John. Registration for the August sessions will be opening in early July and we are hoping that we will have about the same number of people interested in reserving a spot for that session. The next Saturday Tech Session on the 1st of July will feature a presentation from Paul, VK5PH, on “CW Rennaisance – A Practical Approach” where he will show us some Tips, Tricks, Techniques and Tools for learning and starting to use CW and Morse Code. Those who know Paul understand how passionate he is about CW and using it on air. A Session not to be missed! Don’t forget that if you want to reserve a table at the AHARS Public Buy & Sell on Saturday the 15th of July, you need to drop an email to VK5JB, on geoffb.100@bigpond.com . He will get back to you and confirm your booking. Payment will be made on the day at the venue. Again, please see the attached flyer to this email. I believe that we have about 20 tables already booked, so don’t miss out! Our special presentation of Life Membership Badges will be made to Lloyd Butler, Hans Smit, Christine Taylor, Jim Tregellas and Barry Williams this meeting. Don’t miss the opportunity to come and offer your congratulations and well wishes to these special people who have contributed so much to our club in past years. Our presentation at this meeting will be by VK5ZC (Mike) on general Antenna principles and other interesting stuff, which should be very interesting, as there is always something to learn! A successful committee meeting was held after the Saturday Session, and one of the topics discussed was the possibility of adopting a new way of sending out email and information to members, with the possibility of Special Interest Groups and even a Buy and Sell section. We have asked some of our committee members to look into that and report back to us. Groups.io is one option being considered. Remember that we have our regular Monday Evening AHARS 2 metre Net, on the VK5RAD repeater on 147.00 Mhz. It is a general chat about what we have all been doing and anything that is of interest. It is open to all registered Amateur Operators, and we especially welcome new and recently licensed people to join in and overcome the jitters of being on air. Starts at 20:00 (8 o’clock) and goes to around 21:30 (half past nine) or thereabouts. Come up for a chat and say Hello, especially if we haven’t had the pleasure previously! You don’t have to be an AHARS member to join in! And don’t forget the Bottle Shop Net conducted by VK5LB (Dean) on 3.62MHz every Tuesday evening at 19:30 One of the longest running Nets on the airwaves anywhere! Come up and say Hello if you have 80 metre capability! As always, if you have anything of interest, or any exciting news, please let me know so we can share things with all our members. And that's all for now from me, so keep looking at the emails, and listening to the Sunday broadcast, and stay away from COVID and other nasty bugs. Cheers & 73 from VK5RJ and AHARS for this week. Hello Club Members, Fellow Amateur Operators, and Everyone,

The June Saturday Tech Session will be with John Dawes running a class on “Learning about Radio”, already there are 9 (nine) people signed up for the session. Anybody interested in that last spot??????? Just drop me an email, that is to r.john.kent@gmail.com and we will book you in. Registration for the August sessions will be opened in early July. We will be having a presentation at our June General Meeting by VK5ZC on general Antenna principles and other interesting stuff, so make sure you don’t miss that! We will also be having the good people from WICEN come to address us at our Monthly General Meeting in July, to tell us all about what the do, and how maybe we might be able to participate and help out in their normal and emergency activities. I must put in a plug for our regular Monday Evening AHARS Net, to be found on VK5RAD 2 metre repeater on 147.00 Mhz with a 600Khz negative offset. It is a general chat about what we have all been doing and anything that is of interest. Hello Club Members, Fellow Amateur Operators, and Everyone,
This is John, VK5RJ with this week’s news from the AHARS. I wonder how many people have ordered a new NanoVNA after the very successful workshop we held last Saturday Morning. Jim VK5TR gave an excellent session on how to use the device natively, as would be done in a field environment. This needs a bit of familiarisation with the menu structures in the particular device that you are using, as they are not all the same. Using the VNA linked to a laptop or desktop computer via the USB cable makes it much easier when working in a shack or lab as was demonstrated by myself. Also, in June and August, John Dawes will be running some classes on “Learning about Radio” and “Writing for Radio”. These will be limited space events, so you will have to book a place. Anybody wishing to reserve a place in these sessions will need to send an email to myself (that is r.john.kent@gmail.com) confirming that you wish to register. These will be held as the Saturday Technical Sessions for June and August. See the Flyer attached to the email! We will also be having the good people from WICEN come to address us at our Monthly General Meeting in either June or July, and I will confirm the dates in a future bulletin. Don’t forget that at this month’s General meeting, on the 18th of May, we will have a session where Gordon, VK5CAA will tell us about his experiences and involvement in Radio during his time working in Civil Aviation. It should be a great presentation as he was involved for many years. Hello Club Members, Fellow Amateur Operators, and Everyone!
This is John, VK5RJ with this week’s news from the AHARS. Lunch at the Blackwood RSL was well attended by the regular crowd, and it was great to see the ladies attending. Good conversation and some planning for the NanoVNA session developed. On that note, for anybody interested in learning what a NanoVNA does, and how it can be used, make sure that you come along to the May Saturday Technical session, on the 6th at the Blackwood Uniting Church. This will be a practical hands-on workshop on how to use a NanoVNA to analyse the performance of an antenna, and how use the information it displays. There will be a number of units available for you to have a play with, and a number of antennas and other things to test on. Lots to learn. You may want to buy one after this session! Also, in June and August, John Dawes will be running some classes on “Learning about Radio” and “Writing for Radio”. More about this in future bulletins. These will be limited space events, so you will have to book a place when we get all the details sorted. These will be held as the Saturday Technical Sessions for June and August. See the Flyer attached to the email! Also, great news that Mas Oikawa (JA7FAS/VK5FAS) will be making a return visit to SA and will be happy to address us at one of the monthly meetings later in the year, He will speak about his experience going back over 53 years. Mas is now in the ARRL DX Hall of Fame, having recently achieved his ARRL #1 DX Certificate (340 countries confirmed in mixed bands/modes). What a great achievement! If you are requiring access to the ARRL, please get in touch with Hans (VK5YX) vk5yx@wia.org.au and he will provide you with the details. Hello Club Members and Fellow Amateur Operators,
This is John, VK5RJ with this week’s news from the Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society. The Special Meeting was held Thursday evening, prior to the monthly General Meeting and the issues as advertised were dealt with. All issues were resolved and the motions moved and accepted as detailed in previous emails to members. The Monthly General Meeting was held after that, and the usual business and reports from everybody were made. A number of points to be noted are: For anybody undertaking activities in the Clubs name wishing to be covered by the club insurance should that be required, the committee must be notified before the event. Paul, VK5PH is going to generate a survey to ask the membership what activities and specialities they are interested in. This will be both hard copy on paper as well as electronically by email. Geoff, VK5JB has managed to find a source of reasonably priced bumper stickers for AHARS, and in the near future they should be available at the club meetings for around $3. Possibly later we may also look at a generic Amateur Radio sticker. Any ideas for a slogan…. “Amateur Radio, still works in Emergencies!” ????? We are also looking at the possibility of re-invigorating the Repeated sub-group so that current and future activities happening to the linked repeater network can be reported back the general community. This would hopefully have representation from all clubs in SA. Secretary and Treasurers report for the month were accepted. Reports from the Training, Presentations and Speakers, Repeaters and the Big Buy and Sell sub-committees given. A question re access to the ARRL was answered in the affirmative as VK5JAK has recently got the details from VK5YX to enable access. Graham Dicker gave an excellent presentation on Electrical Safety, and there was much very good advice contained in the presentation. If we take the advice and follow all the recommendations we should all be safe! There are also a number of recent changes to Australian Law which mean that a lot of the old tried and true methods of connecting the 240V power are now no longer legal. Make sure you have the required insurance cover. The night rounded out with excellent supper. Also note that the Saturday Technical session for May, on the first Saturday of the month will be a practical hands-on workshop on how to use a NanoVNA to analyse the performance of an antenna, and how to interpret the graphs that it displays, and what they mean. There will be a number of units available for you to have a play with. Should be very interesting. Also, in June and August, John Dawes will be running some classes on “Learning about Radio” and “Writing for Radio”. More about this in future bulletins. These will be limited space events, so you will have to book a place when we get all the details sorted. These will be held as the Saturday Technical Sessions for June and August. Hello Club Members and Fellow Amateur Operators,
This is John, VK5RJ with this week’s news from the Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society. Easter is over, and hopefully you had a wonderful break and are refreshed and ready for the next exciting thing to come around, which must be Anzac Day! I know my maintenance work on the antennas was well worth the effort! We desperately need somebody to put their hand up to act as our Table Booking Admin for the Public Buy and Sell. This would all be done via email, and should not be an overly onerous task, so if you think you might be able to help, please let either myself or Geoff (VK5JB) know. We need to sort this out so we can get on with the advertising flyers. The Special Meeting will be held next Thursday evening, the 20th of April, prior to running the monthly General Meeting. We will be addressing the issues that were advised via the attachment to last week’s New Brief email, which I will again attach to this week’s. Graham Dicker will be doing his presentation on Electrical Safety, which is a must for all operators, and will be very informative I’m sure. Lunch was enjoyed by the regular crowd on Friday at the Blackwood RSL, although numbers were a little down on the day. Don’t forget the excellent information on the AHARS Web and Facebook pages, and we thank Paul (VK5PAS) for his excellent work administering them. As always, if you have anything of interest, or any exciting news, please let me know so we can share things with all our members. Well, that's all for now from me, so keep looking at the emails, and listening to the Sunday broadcast, and stay away from COVID and other nasty bugs. Cheers & 73 from VK5RJ and AHARS for this week. Hello Club Members and Fellow Amateur Operators,
This is John, VK5RJ with this week’s news from the Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society. Hopefully you are all having a great Easter break, either away and relaxing for the weekend, or like me, doing a few projects around the place. Always a good chance to check out and do some maintenance on the antennas and other bits and pieces when you have a few days off. While there hasn’t been a lot of activity in the last week, there has been quite a lot of planning activity happening for the Public Buy and Sell event, and things are progressing steadily, thanks to Geoff (VK5JB) and his helpers. We would still love to hear from any members who might be able to lend a hand with the set up and running of this event on the day. Get in touch with either Geoff or myself if you can. We are again giving notice that we are holding a Special Meeting prior to running the next monthly General Meeting, and this will be held on the night of the 21st of April as there are a few things that need to be dealt with. There are some minor wording changes that need to be corrected in our Constitution and we need to accept and ratify the minutes of the 2022 AGM. Lunch at the Blackwood RSL will be on again next Friday the 14th, so please let the RSL know if you are coming along. Drop and email to rslbwood@bigpond.com.au. Cheers & 73 from VK5RJ Hello Club Members and Fellow Amateur Operators,
This is John, VK5RJ with this week’s news from the Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society. AHARS had a good representation at Wriggles’ funeral on Wednesday with about 8-10 members present. It was a lovely celebration to Trevor’s life, and his family and friends spoke well of his escapades through the Amateur Radio and TV world. It was a cracker of a day and the funeral was held out under a big tree in the garden at Partridge House in Glenelg. There was also members from the other clubs, North East, AREG, WICEN in attendance. Trevor will be sadly missed by all who knew him. AHARS will once again be holding a Public Buy and Sell event, and this will be held on Saturday 15th of July, at the Marion RSL in Norfolk Road, Marion. Sellers will pay $10.00 and get 2 tickets. Buyers will pay a $5.00 entry fee. If you can spare some time to assist in the running of this event, please get in touch with either myself or Geoff (VK5JB) to be added to the list of helpers. The committee has decided that we need to hold a Special Meeting prior to running the next monthly General Meeting, and this will be held on the night of the 21st of April as there are a few things that need to be dealt with. There are some minor wording changes that need to be corrected in our Constitution and we need to accept and ratify the minutes of the 2022 AGM. More details will follow in future bulletins. The buy and sell was a great success, with over $730.00 raised for the VK5LT Estate. There are still quite a few items that will be up for sale at the Public Buy and Sell. I’m looking forward to Graham Dicker’s presentation at the next monthly meeting on Electrical Safety, which is something we all need to be aware of. Lunch at the Blackwood RSL was well attended by the regular crowd and it was good to see the ladies attending. Don’t forget the excellent information on the AHARS Web and Facebook pages, and we thank Paul (VK5PAS) for his excellent work administering both. As always, if you have anything of interest, or any exciting news, please let me know so we can share things with all our members. I will be away at a reunion in Port Pirie next weekend, so I won’t be able to do the Sunday Broadcast and Email for the 2nd of April. This event was planned and booked last year and can’t be changed. Well, that's all for now from me, so keep looking at the emails, and listening to the Sunday broadcast, and stay away from COVID and other nasty bugs. Cheers & 73 from VK5RJ Hello Club Members and Fellow Amateur Operators,
This is John, VK5RJ with this week’s news from AHARS, the Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society. The big news is that AHARS will once again be holding a Public Buy and Sell event. This will be held on Saturday 15th of July, at the Marion RSL which is in Norfolk Road, Marion. Sellers will pay $10.00 and get 2 tickets. Buyers will pay a $5.00 entry fee. We will have more announcements as details are ironed out. Watch this space! Long serving Committee member Jim (VK5TR) has decided that it is time to hang up his boots and has resigned from the committee. The committee and I’m sure the membership extend a huge “Thank You” to Jim for his years of service. Jim will still be around to offer his advice and technical support, and may be pressed into service to help with Club Projects should we decide to go down that path again. The committee has asked Paul (VK5PH) to step into this vacancy, and he has accepted. Paul will give a (short) presentation at the March General Meeting on some of his ideas as to how AHARS may go forward in the coming years Don't forget that our next general meeting on the 16th March will be a Club Buy and Sell event, so bring along a pocket of cash, and all those unwanted items that are cluttering up you shack that you haven't used in ages. We will not be allowing any Sales or Trading until after the Meeting has been concluded. There are a lot of smaller things from the VK5LT Estate up for sale. Some really nice stuff. Sellers will be asked to arrive and set up in the Hewitt room at 7:00 pm and the room will then be closed until after the conclusion of the business of the Meeting. That’s when the fun will begin! Yesterday’s Tech/Coffee meeting was the last to be regularly scheduled for a 2nd or 4th Saturday. In future, these meetings will be held on the first Saturday of each month. We may have to make an adjustment later in the year due to a prior commitment in the Hewitt Room. Friday lunches at the Blackwood RSL still remain on the Second and Fourth Fridays. I will be attempting to update the information on the AHARS page on the WIA web site, as it is rather out of date, and we are taking steps to have our AHARS Web page (https://www.ahars.com.au) updated with the latest info and committee members. Don’t forget that there is some excellent information on the AHARS Facebook page, and the committee thanks Paul (VK5PAS) for his excellent work administering both the Web page and the Facebook group. As always, if you have anything of interest, or any exciting news, please let me know so we can share things with all our members. I have been asked to send this News Item out in both .doc and .pdf format, so you can choose which to use. Sometimes the .pdf is much faster to load and display. Well, that's all for now from me, so keep looking at the emails, and listening to the Sunday broadcast, and stay away from COVID and other nasty bugs. Cheers & 73s from VK5RJ |
